Clay Fortune Cookies

This project combines literacy, art, and creativity for students who are blind or visually impaired, including those with multiple disabilities.

Students in the Lower School Program at Perkins School for the Blind have been busy making clay fortune cookies this spring in a series of lessons that incorporate literacy, art, and motor skills.  They were given a series of prompts in braille, large print or auditory format and worked with their teachers to write their own “fortunes”.  They then packaged these in cardboard containers, similar to those used for Chinese take-out food.  Many of the fortunes were very creative!

  • braillewriter, pencil or other writing implementfortune cookie
  • Discuss what a “fortune” is.
  • Provide writing prompts, such as:

    • Remember to always…
    • Someday you will…
    • Your dreams will be…
    • A friend is someone who…
  • Students can write the whole thing in braille or large print
  • Students can dictate the fortune to someone else, either a classmate or teacher
  • Have students read each other’s fortunes
