Using Real Objects to Reinforce Consonant Sounds

Many early reading materials rely on printed worksheets or alphabet cards to introduce initial sounds.  This activity uses small objects, stuffed animals, and toys to reinforce initial consonant sounds by matching the letter to the corresponding item that begins with that sound.

Materials: 

  • small stuffed animals, toys, or objects corresponding to different letters of the alphabet (Each one should have a small piece of velcro attached to the back, so that it can be affixed to the board.)
  • a board covered with Veltex or similar fabric to which velcro will stick
  • cards with letters of the alphabet in print and braille

Procedure: 

  1. Review letter cards and their sounds.
  2. Be sure that the student can identify all of the animals, toys, and objects being used in this activity.
  3. Place 2-3 animals and/or toys on the board.
  4. Mix up the corresponding letter cards and place in random order in front of board.
  5. Ask the student to select the correct letter and place it under the animal or toy that starts with that letter

Variations: 

  1. Increase the number of items.
  2. Play with more than one student and take turns.
  3. Place the letter cards on the board and ask the students to find the animal or toy that starts with that letter.
