Seeking Braille Transcribers and Tactile Graphics Transcribers for Paid Research Experiment

University of Maine logo

The VEMI Lab at the University of Maine is seeking participants for its research. They are currently looking for individuals who are at least 18 years old and have professional training and/or at least two years of field experience as a braille transcriber and/or braille tactile graphics transcriber. This study will be recorded and can take place online (via Zoom) or in-person* at the VEMI lab In University of Maine, Orono campus. The study will take about 1.5 to 2 hours to complete.

During the research, you will be asked to convert print materials (with texts, graphics, and mathematical notations) into braille and tactile equivalents using your preferred authoring/conversion methods. You will also be asked to use and evaluate an online system for converting similar print materials into braille and/or tactile formats. The experiment simulates the following scenario: You are sent a PDF via email of a math quiz that has two or more of the following components: (1) text, (2) equations (mathematical notations), (3) graphs, (4) charts, (5) geometric shapes, and/or (6) figures. The student taking the quiz independently needs a tactile equivalent available to them by the next day (within 24 hours). All the text in the PDF, including labels and mathematical notation, should be converted to braille.

Your participation in the study will help improve the system and enable transcribers to convert/generate accessible educational materials quickly. Remote participants must have internet access and a computer with a front-facing camera.

*In-person participants will be responsible for traveling to the VEMI Lab on campus and must agree to adhere to all COVID-19 guidelines set forth by VEMI and UMaine. This includes showing proof of a negative COVID test result within 72 hours of arriving on campus. Participants and experimenters must always wear face masks and stay at least 6 feet apart from one another. If you come to campus, please be sure to bring any materials you may need for tactile conversion.

This research is paid, and participants will receive a $50 gift card to Amazon.

The study will be conducted between July 26th - September 30th. If you are interested, please sign up using the link below. A member of the VEMI Research Team will contact you via email within 48 hours to schedule an appointment for participation.
