Starbucks opens its first store in the United States where all employees use ASL (American Sign Language). The store, which is located in Washington, D.C., employs 24 people, all of whom are fluent in ASL. "It’s a step, employees and advocates say, toward boosting employment opportunities for the deaf community while also immersing hearing individuals in deaf spaces. And it’s a show of support from one of the world’s largest corporate brands."
The store is located just a few blocks from Gallaudet University, which is the world's only university designed for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
