DIY Father's Day Journal

Dad journal

Here's a Father's Day activity that you can do with your students.

Oriental Trading has a "DIY Journal Craft Kit". It comes with an imitation leather cover, 25 blank pages and cord lacing to bind it all together. The cost is $13.50, but you can make 12 journals in this "unit".   My student was able to braille a message on one page leaving the rest of the pages blank for her father to use. She decorated the cover to be personal for her father. The binding was difficult for her, so I completed that for her.

Oriental Trading also had a "Color Your Own Handy Helpers" kit. It was $4.98 for 12 of these kits. My student was able to color the "tools" that went in the "toolbox".  She then put a message on each of the tools adding braille labels to the "tools".

We love these little books too!  We'd love to see some photos of your symbol journal, Linda.  It would be great to share them on the site.

I am using the journals as a new symbol journal...we're using our slate and stylus to add the words! Love these little books!

I love this idea! I didn't have time to do this with my students for Father's Day. But I have since ordered it and I have learned when their parents birthdays are and we're making them as birthday gifts! The books are such fun to make are relatively inexpensive. I've gone ahead and ordered a few more 'units' to last us the year. My plan is to do this activity with my low vision and braille students alike!
