The Story of Busem: A Young Girl in Turkey Who Is Blind with Additional Disabilities Learns to Read Braille

This story of a young Turkish girl who is blind with additional disabilities tells about the journey from her premature birth to learning braille.

Busem was born at 26 weeks and weighed 700 grams.

Busem is a young girl in Turkey, who was born at just 26 weeks. She was 700 grams and she spent her first 3 months in an intensive care unit. Due to Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), she lost vision in both eyes and surgery was not able to restore her sight.  During that time, her life was in danger, but her mother’s love and the care of the doctors kept her alive.  In addition to being blind, Busem also has cerebral palsy (CP), a seizure disorder (epilepsy) and cognitive impairment.  At the age of 6 months, she started attending the Special Education and Rehabilitation Center on a regular basis. Her mother followed through with therapeutic activities at home.  According to the reports from the Health Board, Busem made significant developmental progress, due to the efforts of her family.  Her best friend is her sister Nilay Erva, who is 20 months younger.  Busem likes to listen to stories, fairy tales, and play videos. She smiles frequently and is a happy child.

Preschool Education

Through the efforts of her family, a special class was opened at the public school in the district, and Busem was able to complete her pre-school education there. She enjoyed listening to music and singing songs with the guidance of the classroom teachers, and she also started to learn about musical instruments.  Busem was directed to the School for the Blind by the Guidance and Research Center for primary school education.

School for the Blind

Busem is now brought to school by her family and she continues her education through their efforts. In the early days of school, she suffered from learning difficulties, due to her physical and mental impairments. I gave her family suggestions to support emergent literacy skills, such as using real objects to match words and sentences that Busem’s read. Her mother tried to use real objects to represent the meanings of words, so that Busem could make sense of what she read. In addition, her teacher followed this process and tried to support Busem’s mother. Her mother’s truly devoted attention and efforts are admirable. When I watched a video showing that Busem can read, my eyes filled with tears. I wanted to share the story of this family, as they may be an inspiration to others.

“We, as family, continue to do as much as we can to make it possible for Busem to live as independently as possible, with support from her valued educators.” – Özlem Yaman and Ercan Yaman (Busem’s parents)

Video Demonstrations of Busem Reading Braille

In this video we see Busem (age 7 years) reading a story in Turkish.  The text says, “I want reading. I didn’t know how to read before I started school.”

Busem is using her left hand to read the braille and, because of her cerebral palsy, she does not automatically keep her right hand on the paper to hold it in place and to help to track each line.  We see her mother in the video grabbing her hand and placing it on the next line.  Ideally the adult would allow Busem to find the next line herself, or use tactile markers or verbal cues to help her to find the next line.

In the second video, we see Busem keeping her right hand on the edge of the paper to hold it in place and the adult is manipulating her left hand a bit less.

Busem Belinay YAMAN
