Having Pride: Promoting Social Skills through Writing

Combine writing and social skills in this activity to promote kindness and helpfulness in students who are blind or visually impaired.

Students need to learn how to develop pride within themselves and also to learn to compliment others on their helpfulness or kindness towards others.

Pride Points

Pride Points can be given to students who demonstrate one of the five traits of P.R.I.D.E. (Positivity, Respect, Integrity, Determination, Excellence). These points can be used as a reward system to earn prizes such as tangible things or activities kids like to do. Students can award Shout-outs to peers for showing pride and have them announced over the public address system in their schools during morning announcements.

Super Kids

Some students enjoy volunteer ingto have their bodies traced for the figure of a Super Kid. The child then thinks of ways one can show pride by naming them. The tracing of the “Super Kid” can be labeled with these in the learning medium of the child. The Super Kids can be placed on a wall in a prominent place for the child to be reminded about and then to try to act upon. This can be used in other settings, such as at home.

Examples of ways to be a “Super Kid”:

  • Help friends.
  • Complete all our work.
  • Be on time.
