Helping to get Braille into the Hands of Students

Meet this inspiring braille volunteer who wanted to get braille into the hands of more readers.

I met Sandy almost two years ago when she emailed me here at Paths to Literacy. She and her husband live in Alaska and she wanted to help get braille books into the hands of more students. She is self taught and highly accurate with her braille skills. Sandy saw the cost of braille books and wanted to help.

We developed a mail system where she would send me her work in small boxes. With shipping cost being expensive, we are grateful for “Free Matter for the Blind” to get the items to students around the world. Sandy made easy readers, Fable stories, and would send me the pieces to “The Love Bugs” books where I could then assemble them. I told her about how books in braille and large print often work great with younger students so peers and family members can read the books together. We use the clear sheets to put braille over print from APH.

As a TVI (Teacher of the Visually Impaired), I then would pass the materials along to over TVIs to give to their students.

Sandy is just one of many that help others in our vision community. Many thanks to her and all of you as we head into the next school year!
