Learning Prepositional Phrases through O&M

This activity for students with visual impairments incorporates writing and the use of prepositional phrases

  • Students will write complete sentences based on their orientation and mobility skills.
  • Students will utilize proper punctuation and correct spelling.
  • Students will include a prepositional phrase in each sentence.
  • Student will identify the prepositional phrase and its parts.
  • Students will be able to explain the difference between a preposition, an infinitive, and an adverb.


Expanded Lesson:

  • Students will be able to determine if a prepositional phrase is used as an adjective or adverb.
  • Students will write narrative or expository paragraphs based on their travel skills.
  • O&M journal
  • Scribe or recorder
  • Braille writer, note taker, iPad, or computer
  • Highlighters, markers, post-a-notes, stickers
  1. Ask the students’ orientation and mobility instructor if he or she requires the students to keep an O&M journal. If the students do not, ask the COMS if he or she would be willing to work with you by having the students keep journals.
  2. If the students do not have a COMS, pair them up with another student and have the helper record travel information. (Ex. How do you get to the cafeteria from this classroom? How do you get from the principal’s office to the auditorium?) This could be done during study hall. If this is not possible, have them work with a family member and answer similar questions. (Ex. How do I get from the kitchen to the mailbox? How do I get from the living room to the neighbors’ swimming pool?) The students can either have their helpers record the information or they can do it themselves using a recorder.
  3. Student are to submit a list of 10 *sentences describing their travels. In each sentence, they are to include at least one prepositional phrase and must identify it. (They could underline it with a marker or wikki stix, point out with a post-a-note, etc. It also could be done orally.) They will do the same with the object of the preposition. **complete sentences, proper punctuation, correct spelling
  4. Once confident the students can identify a prepositional phrase, give the students a reading passage that contains prepositional phrases, infinitives, and adverbs. Students will identify the preposition phrases using the same methods listed above. If the students incorrectly identify infinitives and adverbs, review the definition of each.
  5. This lesson could be expanded so that the students must determine if the prepositional phrases are used as adverbs or adjectives.
  6. This lesson also could be expanded into a narrative or expository paragraph.
