Back in 2014 I wrote a post called Positional Concept Activity for Pre-Braille. I added to it this week by making it more of a game.
Setting Up the Game
To create the “board”, I put a strip of Velcro around the perimeter of an 8 and 1/2 by 11 inch piece of heavy paper or cardstock, along with a small piece of Velcro in the center. The Velcro is there to help hold the pieces once they put the object in place. Once they seem to have mastered the concepts, I try it on a page with no Velcro.
Playing the Game
The student chooses a square block shape (one is big and the other is small…more concept building). There are cards with positions written on them, including top right, top left, bottom right, left, right, top, anywhere, bottom, middle, center, and bottom left. I have not yet added braille or large print to the cards, but plan to do so.
In the beginning the student starts out by doing this alone with me turning the cards. Once they are more familiar with the activity, I will join in to work on our turn-taking skills as well. The “Anywhere” card is for the student to choose where to put their block…BUT they have to tell me location that they put the block.
One student likes to try to use her vision, so I created a shelf to block her view.
I created this data tracking sheet to track their progress.
I am currently working on this activity with 3 students (Kindergarten, 1st grade and 7th grade).
