Project INSPIRE: Professional Development

Explore professional development courses focused on providing training to educators on increasing the STEM potential of students with visual impairments.

Professional Development Courses

The Project INSPIRE team created seven courses to assist teachers of students with visual impairments, paraprofessionals, braille transcribers, and others who support PK-12th grade students who are blind or have low vision. Each course contains:

  • 3 to 4 lessons focused on the math braille code (Lessons 1-6 Nemeth Code, Lesson 7 UEB Math/Science)
  • 2 to 3 lessons focused on instructional strategies and materials

The following courses are available:

These course materials were developed before the 2022 revisions to the Nemeth Braille Code for Mathematics and Science Notation. However, most course content on this site remains relevant; only a few PowerPoint slides require updates. For additional information, we recommend reading the Fall 2025 “Texas SenseAbilities” article What’s New in the Nemeth Code by Susan Osterhaus and Maylene Bird. They outline key changes in the Nemeth code affecting K–12 braille transcription.
