This strategy was created to make braille more meaningful to a young student who is just learning the code. A Kindergarten student heading out to recess is able to review a card with his preferred activities outside written in braille on each. HIs favorite activities are the bike (tricycle), ball, swing, and slide. Those items are listed to the left and at the bottom is the word rug. At the end of recess the teacher has a floor rug that she puts on the ground to help him line up to go back inside. The word cards are taken from the Word Associations Print-Braille Labels available from APH. Velcro is put on the backs to help hold the words in place.
As he has been struggling with learning braille and making the braille code meaningful to him, this is an attempt to help him connect the braille symbols he works on in braille class to the words he will be encountering on a daily basis.
