Project INSPIRE: Increasing the STEM Potential of Individuals who Read Braille

Seven free courses for professionals and three activities for middle and high school braille readers

By Tina Herzberg and Penny Rosenblum

Welcome to Project INSPIRE: Increasing the STEM Potential of Individuals who Read Braille.

Project INSPIRE was a 5-year grant funded by the US Department of Education, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (H235E190003). Learn about the publications and conference presentations completed by the Project INSPIRE team.

Project INSPIRE had two focuses, professional development and student programs.

Professional Development

We created seven courses for teachers of students with visual impairments, paraprofessionals, braille transcribers, and others who support PK-12th grade STEM learning. The courses are free and self-paced. Each course has lessons on math braille codes as well as materials and instructional practices.

Student Programs

As part of Project INSPIRE’s commitment to increase STEM braille literacy, we designed three programs for upper elementary, middle, and high school students. We invite educators and families to use our materials.

Resources

We added math learning resources that can be used in supporting students who are blind or have low vision. The page includes resource lists by grade band or content area, recorded webinars, etc.
