WaterViz Session 2: Investigation 1 (News Article)

This is the second session in the WaterViz collection of water cycle lessons and activities.

Materials

Activities

  • The WaterViz Story: Environmental scientists watch the video to learn about experimental forests, including Hubbard Brook, the types of data collected in these forests, and about how WaterViz works.
  • Introduction to a 2018 Hubbard Brook Rain Event: Environmental scientists read and discuss the introduction section of the “July 2018 Rain Event Article”. (Investigation 1 Worksheet)
  • Environmental scientists pair up or form teams and are tasked with becoming an expert on 1-2 water cycle components. Teams read the “July 2018 Rain Event Article”, make observations, and take notes to help identify trends in how their water cycle component behaved, including any connections between water cycle component trends during the rain event.
  • Partners/teams collaborate in determining a creative way to share what they learned with the other teams. Some ideas include using tactile art supplies to create an accessible chart, sharing an analogy or word picture (e.g. One group used a roller coaster analogy to describe evaporation/transpiration and temperature since these values went up and down daily), making a video, or recording a voice memo.
  • Virtual Gallery Walk: Teams take turns sharing about how their water cycle component(s) changed during the 2-week rain event. Daily and longer-term trends and connections between different components are identified and discussed.
