When teaching my students how to use their monocular, I begin by having them master these tracking cards before I push in lessons in the classroom. The purpose of these cards is to use both low and high contrast with the monocular. This is the way real life is, as we can’t optimize every aspect of the student’s day, but we can teach them how to accommodate for themselves so they can be successful.
The cards are made of plastic (covers from flexible binders) and the words/numbers are velcroed on. The tape is cheap colored tape. I use easy words and numbers, as the focus is not on teaching them how to read, but rather on the efficient use of the device to find success in accessing the curriculum in the classroom and in the community.

The yellow tape is to help them track across the card in the direction that the card is designed. After they are successful in their tracking, I then remove the yellow tape since in the classroom there will be no tracking lines. I do a combination of words and numbers, sometimes combining the two. This is a great way to work on Sensory Efficiency!
