WaterViz Session 3: Investigations 2 & 3

This is the third session in the WaterViz collection of water cycle lessons and activities. It includes animated art with image description and musical data sonification.

Materials

Activities

  • Analyzing Data Presented as Animated Art: After reviewing the water cycle trends identified in the 2018 summer rain event, the image description of the WaterViz animated art is read aloud. The WaterViz Water Sounds video of the same 2018 summer rain event is then played, and environmental scientists listen and/or watch for changes in the video.
  • Gathering Information from Image Descriptions: Environmental scientists use their knowledge of the water cycle to match each component with an animated art description.
  • Analyzing Data Presented as Music: Environmental scientists listen to data from the same summer rain event that was musically sonified. Sonification is the use of non-speech audio to convey information or perceptualize data. Environmental scientists discuss trends they had previously observed in the water cycle data to help anticipate how those trends might sound when presented as music. They listen to a series of instrument videos and use data analysis skills to determine the water cycle data represented by each instrument.
  • Water Symphony: Environmental scientists listen to the water symphony video where the musical data for all water cycle components play simultaneously. This helps to reinforce observed trends and connections between the water cycle components.
