After years of writing, researching, collaborating, editing, and anxiously waiting…Tools for TVIs: The Itinerant Teacher’s Handbook is out in the world and available on quota funds from the American Printing House for the Blind!

When APH put out a call for submissions for an update to Jean Olmstead’s beloved book, “Itinerant Teaching: Tricks of the Trade for Teachers of Students with Visual Impairments,” I knew this was a book I wanted to write. The finished product is a manifestation of so many conversations I’ve had over the years with both new teachers and seasoned colleagues as we’ve tried to “crack the code” in being efficient, effective, and loving our job as TVIs year after year.

The Itinerant Teacher’s Handbook is my attempt to put into words the intangible parts of our job beyond the “how-tos” of being a TVI. There are already entire books about how to do an assessment, the ECC, teaching braille, and so on. I wanted to write a book specifically for itinerant teachers who are looking for ways to manage their everyday tasks, level-up their impact, and spend more time doing the parts of their job they love the most. I included the wisdom of many TVIs, published research, voices of TVIs who have low vision, and educational professionals outside of the vision field with the hope that this will be a go-to book TVIs can use throughout the year, robust with information yet accessible enough to grab for a quick idea.
