Welcome to the CVI Book Nook, your go-to online resource for FREE literacy materials. Discover a variety of tools designed to support literacy development while igniting a passion for reading. Although the books were initially designed for students with Cerebral/Cortical Visual Impairments (CVI), they are also suitable for most students, including those who have low vision.
These resources are designed with inclusion at their core, ensuring access and participation from most learners. The variety of formats and the ability to download and edit enables access via screen readers, braille displays, magnification, and other assistive technologies. All materials are created using PowerPoint and include large print and alternative text. As such, they can be edited to meet the specific visual needs of individual students. Use the text files with screen readers and refreshable braille displays. Use the .pdf and .epub files to open
the materials in Apple Books. Watch one of the many CVI-friendly movies.

Open the Movies tab on the menu bar to enjoy all your favorites in one place! Adapted movies can be an excellent learning resource for children with CVI, fostering engagement and understanding. The built-in backlighting, paired with animation, can significantly enhance visual attention. The best feature of these movies is their ability to support inclusion and socialization, enabling the entire class to experience them together!
Materials can be used to unlock the magic of experiential learning!
Open the Experiences tab on the menu bar to unlock the magic of experiential learning. Real-life experiences are important for concept development, building your visual library, creating memories, and participating in predictable routines. Experiential learning is a prerequisite for functional literacy development for all kids and even more important for kids who are blind, have low vision, or have CVI. Finding opportunities to actively engage and explore new environments helps to build important conceptual knowledge of the world.
Going on an adventure in your community is a great way to make meaningful connections to “what you hear around you, what you see around you, and what you feel around you.”(Austin Shepherd) Enjoy the stories as they are or make them your own. You can even use the templates to create a unique experience book from scratch.
Materials can be used to scaffold skills for students who aren’t quite ready to
visually attend to images in a book.
When I created these books, I intentionally chose realistic images of objects commonly found around the home or school. Encourage your child to engage in conversation, move, and interact with the objects while actively discovering the meaning of each concept. Creating a sensory-rich experience for your child will enable them to make real-life connections, supporting conceptual understanding. Children must gain prior knowledge of a concept through personal experience before they can recognize that concept portrayed in a book.
