Mathematics Made Easy for Children with Visual Impairment is the result of a joint project between ICEVI (International Council for Education of People with Visual Impairments), Overbrook School for the Blind, and the Nippon Foundation. This 364-page book is full of information and practical strategies for teaching math to students who are blind or visually impaired. It is available as a free download on the ICEVI website.
The book is divided into 5 sections, as described in the book’s introduction:
Methodology of Teaching Mathematics: This section deals with the general methods used for teaching mathematics in general and teaching the subject to visually impaired children, in particular. This section also enumerates the methods of preparing mathematics text material, learning characteristics of visually impaired children, and evaluation procedures in mathematics.
Use of Abacus: This section provides detailed self-instructional procedures to learn abacus effectively. The exercises include addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fraction, decimals, square roots, and percentages.
Use of Nemeth Mathematical Braille Codes: This section provides illustrations on how to use Nemeth Braille code for all mathematical
notations at the secondary level. Each code is described in detail and accompanied by illustrations.
Instructional Strategies: This section provides instructions on how to adapt procedures for teaching nearly 500 mathematical concepts at the secondary level. This section is also helps non-mathematics teachers to understand concepts before teaching them to visually impaired children.
Creative Mathematics: This section deals with a whole range of creative activities such as using paper folding and the natural environment for teaching and understanding mathematical concepts.
