I recently attended the TSBVI Early Childhood Learning Community with other professionals in the field. The topic changes each month, and this month, we were asked to show and tell about some of our favorite lessons and activities for young learners. Since Easter is approaching, I thought I would share this super easy idea with you all. My students really enjoy this game, and I love all the skills it addresses.
Materials
- Plastic Eggs
- Craft Materials
- Hot Glue or Tacky Glue
- Tub or tray to hold the egg pieces during the activity
Procedure
- Select an egg.
- Select one type of craft material (chenille stems, pompoms, puff paint, beads, gems, stickers, etc…).
- Attach the craft material to each half of the egg.
- Once the eggs are dry, separate the pieces and ask students to use their sense of touch to find the halves that go together to complete the egg.
- Engage in a discussion to identify the different textures or materials that are attached to each egg.
Skill Areas
- Tactile discrimination skills
- Fine motor skills
- Motor planning
- Descriptive skills
- One-to-one correspondence
- Social and turn taking skills
Extension Activities
- Hide the halves in a tub of sand or rice and ask students to search in there for the egg pieces.
- Hide the eggs around the room, and use a map to locate requested textures.
- Count the eggs as you drop them in a bucket.
- Hide items or braille letter cards in the eggs to practice concept development and literacy.
